GSM Cutter Follow Chart

The GSM (Grams per Square Meter) cutter is a tool used in the textile industry to determine the weight of fabric per unit area. It's an essential device for quality control and ensuring consistency in fabric weight.

GSM Cutter follow chart

The GSM cutter is typically used in conjunction with a precision balance.

Here's a simple chart to follow when using a GSM cutter:

  1. Prepare the Fabric Sample:

    • Cut a fabric sample from the roll or bolt, ensuring it's large enough to cover the cutting area of the GSM cutter.
  2. Weigh the GSM Cutter:

    • Before using the GSM cutter, ensure it's calibrated and accurately zeroed on the precision balance. Record the weight of the GSM cutter.
  3. Cut the Fabric:

    • Place the fabric sample on the cutting area of the GSM cutter.
    • Press down firmly to ensure the fabric is flat and evenly distributed within the cutting area.
    • Use the cutting blade to trim excess fabric around the edges of the cutter. Ensure a clean, straight cut.
  4. Weigh the Fabric Sample:

    • Carefully remove the fabric sample from the cutter without disturbing its shape.
    • Place the fabric sample on the precision balance and record its weight. Make sure to account for any debris or excess fabric that may have accumulated on the sample.
  5. Calculate GSM:

    • Subtract the weight of the GSM cutter (step 2) from the combined weight of the fabric sample and cutter (step 4). This gives you the weight of the fabric sample alone.
    • Divide the weight of the fabric sample by the cutting area of the GSM cutter (usually expressed in square centimeters).
    • Multiply the result by 10,000 to convert the weight from grams per square centimeter to grams per square meter (GSM).

GSM = (Weight of Fabric Sample / Cutting Area of GSM Cutter) * 10,000

  6. Record Results:

    • Record the calculated GSM value along with any relevant information about the fabric sample, such as the fabric type, color, lot number, and any observations regarding its quality or appearance.

Following this chart ensures accurate and consistent measurements when using a GSM cutter, helping textile professionals maintain quality standards and monitor fabric weight throughout the production process.
